For Immediate Release: Monday (May 7, 2012)

OLYMPIA (FL) H.S. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NATIONAL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Olympia (Orlando, FL) remains the No. 1 team in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll with a sparkling 28-0 record.

The Titans won their district title after defeating West Orange, 3-2 and Ocoee, 11-1 to advance to regional play. In their first Florida 8A state playoff game, they defeated Boone, 10-0.

Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX) remains No. 2 with a 30-1 record. The Wildcats opened the Texas 4A state playoffs with a 5-0 win over Hidalgo. Wyatt Mathisen threw a complete game shutout, giving up 7 hits, striking out two and allowing only two runners to get past first base. He also hit a home run in the first inning.

Jesuit (Tampa, FL) remains No. 3 with a 26-1 record. The Tigers beat Middleton, 12-2 and Robinson, 9-2 for the district championship and advanced to the Florida 5A playoffs where they defeated Bayshore, 5-0.

Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is No. 4 after ending its regular season with a 30-2 record. Over the last seven games, the Gaels have outscored opponents, 98-7. Joey Gallo has tied the Nevada career home run record with 60 and is expected to break it with regionals and state playoffs ahead.

Nova (Davie, FL) is No. 5 after capturing the district championship with a 6-0 win over Cooper City and 2-0 victory over St. Thomas. In the first regional game, they beat Northeast, 1-0 to advance in the Florida 7A playoffs. Their record is 24-1.

No. 6 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) recently split a home/home series with Mater Dei, losing 1-0 and winning 8-3. They have one loss in the Trinity League so far and are No. 1 in Los Angeles area polls with a 19-4 record.

No 7. Carroll (Corpus Christi, TX) opened the Texas 5A state playoffs with a 9-0 win over Stevens (San Antonio, TX). Now 25-3 on the season, the Tigers have posted a .354 team batting average and a 2.13 team ERA.

Providence (Charlotte, NC) is No. 8 after an 8-3 loss to Ardrey Kell that made both teams co-Southwestern 4A conference champions. It is Providence’s fourth consecutive conference title. The Panthers went on to defeat Rocky River, 12-4 and Butler, 4-1 to improve to 24-2 on the season.

No. 9 Columbus, GA opened the first round of playoffs with a sweep over Arabia Mountain, 10-0 and 14-0 to improve to 23-3 overall. Leading the team are Kyle Carter (8-2 record, .370 BA, 14 HR, 27 RBI) and J.T. Phillips (7-0 record, .400 BA, 3 HR, 18 RBI).

No. 10 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) split two games with Orange Lutheran and beat Junipero Serra, 5-1 and 5-2 for an 11-2 league record and 19-5 record overall. They are ranked No.2 in several area polls.

Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is No. 11 with a 20-3-1 record and among the top teams in area polls.

Spanish Fork, UT is No. 12 having finished its regular season with a 19-3 record. The Dons are the Region 12 champions which is their fourth title in a row. They have been undefeated in regional play for three straight seasons, posting 34 wins.

Maize, KS moves to No. 13 with a 16-1 record and recent wins over Bishop Carroll, 3-2, Newton, 10-0 and 7-2.

No. 14 Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, MS) won the Mississippi 6A semi-finals over Gulfport. They lost the first game, 5-1 and came back to win 9-2 and 3-2. In the third game, Oak Grove captured the win through great defense. Gulfport hit three singles in the final inning, but Oak Grove came up with defensive plays to stop the threat. In one play RF Brandon Maddox threw a bullet to stop Gulfport’s Stephen Stiglits trying to go from first to third on a single. They advance to the South State finals against Harrison Central.

No. 15 Martin (Arlington, TX) opened the Texas 5A state playoffs with a sweep over Odessa, 10-0 and 8-2 and will meet Franklin (El Paso, TX) in the next round. They are 30-2-1 overall.

JW North (Riverside, CA) is No. 16 with a 23-4 record. They won 10 straight games before losing their first league game of the season to Corona Santiago, 2-0. They defeated Bonita, 5-4 for the Centennial Tournament championship. Gabriel Clark hit two home runs, 4 RBI and scored two runs to lead North in the title game.

Broken Arrow, OK is No. 17 and recently won its regional with victories over Grant (Oklahoma City), 17-1, Union, 10-1 and 2-0. They are 33-4 overall.

No. 18 Owasso, OK will enter the state tournament for the 15th time in 16 years. The Rams defeated Mustang, 13-2 and 9-8 to win the region. Andrew Rosa hit 6-for-11 (.545) in the regional with 6 runs, 7 RBI, a double, a triple and two home runs.

No. 19 Seven Lakes (Katy, TX) defeated Milby (Houston, TX) in the District playoffs, 13-0 and 9-2 to advance in the state playoffs. They are 27-4-1 overall.

No. 20 St. Francis (Mountain View, CA) is 22-3-1 on the season with a couple of recent losses to St. Ignatius, 1-0 and Serra, 7-4.

Northwest Rankin (Brandon, MS) is No. 21 and split two games with Southaven, winning 4-0 and losing 5-4 in the third round of the state playoffs. Previously they beat Warren Central, 8-0 and 4-3. They are 28-4 overall.

No. 22 Pelham, AL was knocked out in the third round of the Alabama 6A state playoffs by Spain Park. They lost the first game 3-2, won the second 8-0 and los the final game 5-2. They finished their season 36-5.

Bryant, AR is No. 23 and received a bye in the first round of the state playoffs. They are 21-7 and still among the top teams in Arkansas.

Melbourne, FL is No. 24 and defeated Seabreeze (Daytona Beach), 5-4 in the first round of the Florida 6A state playoffs to advance in the tournament. They are 27-3 for the season.

Parkview (Lilburn, GA) is No. 25 and advanced to the second round of the Georgia 5A tournament after defeated Collins Hill, 5-1 and 5-1. They completed their regular season with a 5-2 win over Columbus. They have a 23-5 record.

No. 26 Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, MI) has moved into the top spot in Michigan polls after posting a 20-2 record.

No. 27 Lexington, SC also is the No. 1 team in South Carolina’s 4A Division with a 25-2 record. They have a 15 game win streak.

No. 28 Poly Prep Country Day (Brooklyn, NY) has posted nine straight wins recently for a 12-3 record. They are seeking their sixth straight Ivy Prep League crown.

No. 29 Columbus (Miami, FL) won its district championship with a 7-0 victory over South West and won its first regional playoff against South Ridge, 4-0. They have a 24-4 record.

St. Laurence (Burbank, IL) is No. 30 with a 25-3-1 record. They moved into a tie for first place in the Catholic League Blue.

Four teams slipped out of the poll including Lakewood, CA 24-6, James River, VA 12-5, Rockford, MI 15-4 and Mount Carmel (Chicago, IL) 24-3.
